re_vision inter-disciplinary design-build student group
University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

In the fall of 2004, we were contacted by Jared Hueter, co-chair of the design-build student group, Revision, at the University of Arkansas. Revision, comprised of members of the College of Engineering, School of Interior Design, and each discipline within the School of Architecture including architecture and landscape architecture, was interested in forming a partnership with Project Locus and collaborating on the design and implementation of future projects, focused first on addressing the needs of underserved communities in and around Fayetteville. In January 2005, we met with Jared and the other members of the group in Arkansas to discuss the possibilities of working together, and as a result we have agreed to assist them in their efforts. While the central motivation of our partnership with Revision is the design and construction of physical space, we will also be advising them on the governance and sustainability of their group including organization, administration, fundraising and grant writing. We hope to not only help them as a group to become an essential element in the University of Arkansas' contribution to the community, but also to equip them as individuals to move later into their professional lives as responsible and skilled civic leaders.

Mission

re_Vision is a student organization that enhances and integrates many different design fields within the university. We feel our education needs to be expanded beyond the classroom and beyond the scope of books, drawing boards and computers, into the public arena. Our desire is to foster awareness of the economic, social, and community issues that need to be addressed by us, the students. The interaction of the different design fields with the community will lead us to a personal realization that we can have a positive impact on our community. This will ultimately instill a desire within us for community interaction and involvement not only now, but in the future. Our fundamental goal is to demonstrate that although we are separate groups -- students and community, designers and sociologists -- when we work together we can have a positive impact on the community and on each other.

Goals

1. Fill the gap in our education between paper design and professional application.
2. Foster an awareness of social issues that are affecting our community.
3. Instill a desire for community interaction and involvement.
4. Help each of us to come to a personal realization that design can have a positive social impact on our community.
